Stress something that we all deal with on a daily basis.  It can come in many shapes and forms.  It can be triggered through family, friends, work or yourself.  What we do with the stress, how we use it and how we cope with it are the important pieces to making stress not take over our lives.  Below are some tips to help manage your stress.

  1. Acknowledge that you are feeling stressed.
  2. Make a note of your body’s physical signs that you are stressed e.g. clenched teeth, increased heart rate, sweating, shaking etc.
  3. Can you remove the stressor from your life?  If yes, take steps to do so.
  4. Ground yourself – one way I love to do this is by using my five senses – what can I smell, taste, feel, hear, see – put yourself in a safe space and breathe deep.  Make a picture so you don’t have to think when you are already stressed or use your hand. (see below for an example).
  5. Ask for help.
  6. Talk about what you are feeling, why you are feeling that way and create a plan to help you get through the stress.
  7. Use your support system to help you manage what is happening.  You are a human not a machine.  You do not have to do everything all the time.  Delicate tasks that others can complete for you.
  8. Find time for yourself.  I completely understand how hard this can be.  I am a full time mom and wife.  I work full time during the day and part time at night.  Trying to find 5 minutes to myself some days feels completely impossible.  I also know how important it is for me to be able to sit back for 10, 15, 20, and if I am really lucky 30 minutes and not have to think about anything other then what I am going to do for me!
  9. Eat right.  I know can people shove this down your throat any more?  When you are stressed though your food should become your medicine (really it should always be your medicine).  When you start eating real food and load your body with high sugar, high carbs, processed food you are only damaging your body, fogging your brain and making it harder to function and cope with everyday stressors.  Please just trust me on this one.  When you are stressed your body needs high quality food and nutrition so that it can function properly.
  10. Exercise.  Even if it is only 10 minutes move your body.  This allows you to release the physical part of the stress.  I love to either run or do a form of MMA.  It helps me to get all the stress and anger that comes with that stress out.  I have friends that find yoga or meditation to be way more beneficial for them when they are stressed.  Find what works best for you and do it!

Trace your hand. Make each finger a one of your five senses. Put in what you enjoy most for that sense. Use the picture when you need a quick reminder to ground yourself.
